Dr Paul Bain

Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

I am a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry and am a fully trained and qualified Medical Doctor. I am accredited and registered (GMC number 6131572). After completing my initial medical degree, I completed a full and extensive post-graduate specialist training in the specialty of general psychiatry and then child and adolescent psychiatry (5 years).

I was born in London, but lived most of my life in France where I completed a lot of my training. I returned to London in 2005 to take up a Consultant Psychiatrist post within the NHS where I remained for 5 years.

I have a multilingual background. I speak French and Spanish fluently (as well as English of course!) and I enjoy practising in all three languages. This is of value with many international families in London who come to see me. Families tell me how they have appreciated my cultural awareness, as being isolated from their country of origin often contributes to the difficulties they face.

I have dedicated my career to clinical work and enjoy evaluating and treating children and adolescents before other activities. Young people have told me that they feel treated as equals when under my care and this engages them very effectively.

I am registered with the General Medical Council and am on the specialist register for the discipline. I have successfully completed my revalidation and  I meet all the requirements to be able to practice in this field.

During my time in the NHS, I led a community based child and family mental health service as well as a young persons’ inpatient psychiatric unit for the more troubled adolescents. I have worked on several adolescent inpatient facilities with different organisations including the Priory group.

I have since developed an exciting private practice in central London currently based at 35 Great James Street in Bloomsbury,  where I share consulting rooms with valued colleagues. We engage in regular CPD supervision and benefit from each other's clinical guidance and support.

As part of my training, I received additional teaching in highly regarded institutions such as the National Institutes of Health in the USA, the Anna Freud Centre London or Autism Research Centre Cambridge.  I have been involved in research although this has not been my principal focus.  I have been invited to sit on national drug advisory boards. I also valued my involvement in the European Union of Medical Specialists.

More recently, I developed an innovative adolescent intensive outpatient facility in central London. This project named the Bear Project Young Persons Treatment  offers a comprehensive multi disciplinary DBT therapy programme for young people who are very unsettled emotionally.

In addition, I developed a PANS/PANDAS psychiatric evaluation clinic which collaborates with the immunology and neuropediatric team of the Portland Hospital in Central London.
